{"id":79,"date":"2018-07-11T14:49:57","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T14:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saddleback.wedgewooddesign.com\/?page_id=79"},"modified":"2025-03-24T15:52:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T15:52:28","slug":"faqs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/index.php\/faqs\/","title":{"rendered":"FAQ&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #006635;\"><br>\nFirst Time Concerns<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-637 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-7-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-7-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-7-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-7.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Should I bring my dog for a one night trial run to see if they like it?<\/h4>\n<p>We have found that this is not helpful for your dog.\u00a0 In general, dogs have hard time with change so a one night trial is too short of a time for your pup to adjust.\u00a0 If you feel the need for a \u201ctrial run\u201d then a weekend is best.\u00a0 It gives your dog a chance to adjust to our schedule, get to know the staff and make a few new dog friends!\u00a0 However, we find most dogs are fine without this extra effort.<\/p>\n<h4>Do you need to meet my dog beforehand?<\/h4>\n<p>No, you certainly can schedule a visit, but it is not necessary.\u00a0 Our staff is skilled at handling many different kinds of dogs so all are welcome.\u00a0 Neither is it necessary for training dogs,\u00a0 Nancy is willing to work with all types of dogs and problems.<\/p>\n<h4>Will my dog feel abandoned, miss me or be mad at me?<\/h4>\n<p>No, your pet will have a great time at \u201ccamp\u201d.\u00a0 Your dog may be a bit confused when you walk out the door without them, but similar to a toddler they quickly refocus on us.\u00a0 Dogs have a very weak sense of time so they are not aware of how long they are here.\u00a0 Your pet will have plenty of exercise and personal attention while they are here and our routine gives them a sense of comfort.\u00a0 Dogs are great at living in the moment and we make sure all their needs are met during their visit.\u00a0\u00a0 They will be happy to see you when you return just as when you come home from work.<\/p>\n<h4>Will my dog remember me?<\/h4>\n<p>Absolutely, yes!\u00a0 Dogs have a fabulous memory for impression and you have made a wonderful impression on your dog.\u00a0 They will know you instantly and greet you enthusiastically.<\/p>\n<h4>What is a typical day like for my dog?<\/h4>\n<p>The staff arrives early in the morning and lets everybody out, feeds breakfast and does morning medications.\u00a0 Later in the morning everyone get s playtime.\u00a0 Early afternoon is nap time.\u00a0 Staff arrives again around 3 in the afternoon and begins with play groups.\u00a0 Evening meals and medications are then completed.\u00a0 We are fortunate to have staff come in late (around nine at night) to let all the dogs one more time before bed.\u00a0 The late night staff checks on everybody, fills waters, fluffs blankets and makes sure all the dogs are set for a quiet nights rest.\u00a0\u00a0 If your dog is here for training, lessons are integrated into their day around the general schedule.<\/p>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-5-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-5.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>What should I bring?<\/h4>\n<p>You can bring a bed, blanket or your pup\u2019s favorite toys.\u00a0 You should bring any medications that your dog needs; please clearly label them.\u00a0 You can also bring medications that your dog takes on an as needed basis, for example meds for lameness, thunderstorm anxiety or ear infections that may flare up. Please bring a copy of your dog\u2019s vaccination history, emergency contact information and any special diet requirements.\u00a0 You may leave your bowls at home, we use our own.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #006635;\">Dog Care<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>What happens in a medical emergency?<\/h4>\n<p>Conveniently, Nancy\u2019s husband is a veterinarian and is available for both emergencies and routine care.\u00a0 We own Northwood Veterinary Hospital and is located just a few miles away; there are also three 24 hour emergency hospitals within 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<h4>Can I get my dog groomed?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, we have an excellent local groomer that can care for your pet.\u00a0 All dogs that are here for more than 2 or 3 days are bathed before they go home and nails are trimmed, but if you would like a full grooming we can\u00a0arrange it for you.<\/p>\n<h4>Is your facility temperature controlled?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, your pets comfort is our first priority.\u00a0 We have radiant heat in our floors to keep the floors warm in the colder weather.\u00a0 There is also radiant heat in the outside runs so that your pet will not slip or injure themselves on the ice.\u00a0 We have large ceiling fans in each kennel room to circulate heat and cool air.\u00a0 We also have some areas that are air conditioned for older dogs or breeds that may have a hard time in the heat.<\/p>\n<h4>How many dogs do you care for at one time?<\/h4>\n<p>We average 15-18 dogs here at any given time.\u00a0\u00a0 We have 27 runs and during peak seasons we may be full, but we also have more staff so that our guests receive the same personalized attention.<\/p>\n<h4>What happens to the dogs when you are closed or on holidays<\/h4>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #006635;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-636 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-6-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-6-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/saddleback-pet-boarding-dog-training-6.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666666; font-size: 14px;\"><br>\nThe dog\u2019s days are all pretty much the same\u2026..weekends, weekdays and holidays.\u00a0 Our staff is here 7 days a week to care for your pet.\u00a0 We are simply closed for appointments on certain days, Wednesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.\u00a0 We are open all other holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>How do you decide which dogs play together?<\/h4>\n<p>All dogs are evaluated in regard to age, athletic ability, personality, size etc. and then we form small play groups.\u00a0 We only allow 2, 3 or maybe 4 dogs to play at a time; this allows for maximum supervision and safety.<\/p>\n<h4>If my dog doesn\u2019t like other dogs do they still get play time?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, they get the same amount of outside time to play in our big yards.\u00a0 They are allowed to explore on their own or play with one of our staff.<\/p>\n<h4>Where do you exercise the dogs?<\/h4>\n<p>We have approximately an acre of land divided into several fenced play yards.\u00a0 This space allows your dog to play in the woods and open spaces and gives us ample opportunity to exercise each dog for the length of time they require.\u00a0 For training dogs, we can simulate realistic situations to practice coming when called.<\/p>\n<h4>Do I need to bring my dog\u2019s crate?<\/h4>\n<p>No, most dogs enjoy the comfort of our large runs.\u00a0 However, if your dog needs to be crated for medical reasons, or if they are a puppy and are still getting their schedule straight\u2026..we have plenty of crates available.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel your dog needs their own crate, you are welcome to bring it.<\/p>\n<h4>How do I bring my pet\u2019s food?<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-514\" src=\"https:\/\/saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Saddleback-Pet-Services-FAQ_addsmdog-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Saddleback-Pet-Services-FAQ_addsmdog-1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.saddlebackpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Saddleback-Pet-Services-FAQ_addsmdog-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>You can bring the food in whatever container is most convenient for you.\u00a0 You can individually bag meals, bring it in its original bag or some kind of large tupperware is fine, too.<\/p>\n<h4>What vaccinations do you require?<\/h4>\n<p>We request that all dogs be current on their rabies, distemper-parvo combinations, bordatella and leptospirosis vaccinations.\u00a0 We will accept your veterinarian\u2019s recommendations for frequency and titers for proof of immunity are acceptable.\u00a0 We also recommend that you have your dog checked yearly for heartworm and intestinal parasites.<\/p>\n<h4>Can you administer injections?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, our staff is trained to administer injections.\u00a0\u00a0 We can accommodate most medical special requests.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 18px;\">Can you accommodate special diets?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We are willing to follow any diet requests that you may have.\u00a0 We have a refrigerator and a freezer available.\u00a0 You are welcome to bring your own food of any kind or we carry 13 different kinds of dog food on site.\u00a0 We usually have the adult diets, so if your dog is on puppy or weight control, we ask that you bring it with you.\u00a0 Dogs may be fed once, twice or three times daily.<\/p>\n<h4>Will you give my dog their heartworm or flea &amp; tick medicine?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, just bring the medication with you and we will give it on the requested day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #006635;\">Training<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>May I visit my dog during training?<\/h4>\n<p>Unfortunately, we have found that visits are counterproductive for your dog.\u00a0 It is difficult for them to see you and not go home with you. So, we ask that you trust us and wait until the end of training to see your pet.\u00a0 You can call anytime and we will update you on our progress.<\/p>\n<h4>Do I bring the entire family to the training lesson?<\/h4>\n<p>Definitely the adults in the house should attend, if at all possible.\u00a0 Children are welcome to attend, but the lesson is several hours long and the first hour is without your dog. Julie, a long time employee, will assist with training \u2013 giving the dogs exposure to different trainers helps them generalize and be ready for their transition back to their family. Both Julie and Nancy use the same style of training and coordinate all lessons. Your pet will benefit from close to 30 years of training experience.<\/p>\n<h4>Don\u2019t I have to be the one to train my dog?<\/h4>\n<p>No, you have to reinforce training and form a positive working relationship with your dog.\u00a0\u00a0 Your dog can learn from a qualified trainer and then transfer to you.\u00a0 Remember, some o f the most\u00a0 highly trained dogs in the world\u00a0 \u2014 guide dogs for\u00a0 the blind, assistance dogs and law enforcement dogs \u2013 are trained by professionals and transferred to handlers. Training appointments are scheduled every day and can be any time of day or evening.
